Silver (CI 77820) Ban in Nail Industry: Should You Panic?

- 2 min read
Recently, there has been a lot of discussion in the nail industry about a new regulation: the supposed “ban on silver” in nail products across Europe.
Some technicians are already worried, thinking they need to throw away their materials.
Let’s break it down calmly and clearly.
What is CI 77820 (Silver)?
CI 77820 is a pigment used in cosmetic products, including nail products, to create a metallic or silver effect.
Important:
It is NOT an active ingredient in the formula (like photoinitiators), but simply a visual pigment.
What does EU regulation say?
From May 1, 2026, the European Union plans to ban the use of CI 77820 in cosmetic products.
This includes some nail industry products.
However, it’s important to understand:
✔️ This is not an immediate ban
✔️ This is not a key structural ingredient
✔️ Brands have already started adapting
Is this like the TPO situation?
No — and this is where many professionals get confused.
Unlike TPO, which is essential to certain gel formulas, CI 77820 is just a pigment.
This means:
- products can exist without it
- it can be easily replaced
- it does not affect the core performance
What does this mean in practice?
For nail technicians:
✔️ You can continue working normally until 2026
✔️ No need to throw away your current products
✔️ After the ban, simply avoid products containing this pigment
The most common mistake
Many professionals rely on product names:
“silver”, “chrome”, “metal”…
But these are just marketing terms.
The only thing that matters is the INCI list.
If you want to check:
→ look for “CI 77820”
📊 How is the market reacting?
Cosmetic brands are already adapting:
✔️ reformulating products
✔️ replacing the pigment
✔️ promoting “CI 77820-free” formulas
Just like what happened with TPO.
Not a crisis — just evolution
The European beauty industry is one of the most regulated in the world.
Changes like this are normal.
The professionals who succeed are those who:
- stay informed
- understand ingredients
- adapt quickly
